Original 19th Century albumen photograph of whirling dervishes. 10.5" by 8.5." A compelling composition of an adult and child whirling dervish, most likely from Turkey or Iran. with their arms raised. An older man plays the "ney" wind instrument, while a man and child sit on the floor on top of a decorative rug. Whirling Dervishes are part of Sufi order founded in Konya by the followers of Rumi, a 13th century Persian poet. Dervish is a term for an initiate of the Sufi path and whirling is part of a formal Sama ceremony. An aesthetically powerful image. 5" by 7." In very good condition.Item #14303
