President Juan Peron Signs the Woman Suffrage Decree in Argentina, 1947

Photograph

Original vintage Gelatin silver print black and white press photo measuring 9 x 7" and dated September 26, 1947. President Juan Peron signed a decree at the time granting women in Argentina the rights to vote and to obtain legal divorces. The photo depicts a throng of 100,00 excited Argentinians celebrating at the Presidential Palace in Buenos Aires following the announcement. The decree was a major step forward in Argentinian women gaining legal equality that could protect them from the social conservatism that had denied them key rights within their homes and marriages in prior decades. Argentinian woman suffrage was a project promoted ardently by first Lady Eva Peron, who advocated for women domestically and internationally, and who founded and remained an influential member of the Peronist Women's Party until her death in 1952. The photo captures a thrilling collective moment in the modern woman rights movement. Wire photos are different than traditional photographic prints! This print is the result of what used to be breakthrough technology (now completely obsolete) that allowed a photographic image to be scanned, transmitted over "the wire" and then printed at the receiving location. These are the originals that then were printed in newspapers across the country to illustrate the Newspaper story. In very good condition.
