The Plague, which tells the story of a plague sweeping the French Algerian city of Oran, is considered an existentialist classic. The novel stresses the powerlessness of the individual characters to affect their destinies. Along with the novel's existentialist themes, The Plague has also been read as an allegorical treatment of the French resistance to Nazi occupation during World War II. The novel became a bestseller during the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.
