Produced for circulation through the Fantasy Amateur Press Association, the four issues of Moonshine include work by Rick Sneary, Len and June Moffatt, and Stan Woolston. Their essays and reports cover FAPA, the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society, Westercon, the Trans Atlantic Fan Fund, European science fiction groups, amateur printing, and the preservation of earlier publications.

[1] Rick Sneary, ed. Moonshine. No. 27. May 1959. Sneary writes on the International Science Fiction Society, Pierre Versins, European publishing, FAPA administration, conventions, and the exchange of books and periodicals between American and European readers.

[2] Rick Sneary, Len Moffatt, and Stan Woolston. Moonshine. No. 38. August 1969. Issued during planning for Westercon XXIII, with material on the Santa Barbara bid, convention committees, LASFS, and FAPA correspondence. The issue records the practical work behind regional science fiction and fantasy conventions, including voting, publicity, finances, and program planning.

Len Moffatt’s “Partial Recall: The FANlife of Len Moffatt” begins a serialized autobiography with his Pennsylvania childhood and his discovery of science fiction publications and correspondence in 1939. Sneary’s “Thot’s While Typing” discusses FAPA mailings, LASFS, conventions, copyright, publishing, and the fate of printed archives. Woolston’s “One Fan’s Outlook” considers amateur writing, the British Science Fiction Association, writing contests, professional publication, Ray Bradbury, Fred Pohl, and zine production.

[4] Len and June Moffatt, Rick Sneary, and Stan Woolston. Moonshine. No. 44. August 1973. Moffatt’s “Len’s Den” records the 1973 Trans Atlantic Fan Fund campaign and preparations for travel to Britain. It also covers LASFS, the Petards, the Sherlock Holmes Society of Los Angeles, mystery publishing, and plans for a later travel account. Woolston writes on the Best of FAPA poll, Anthony Boucher, Ray Bradbury, collecting, correspondence, conventions, and the work of editing and duplicating publications.

Moonshine presents science fiction and fantasy as fields shaped in large part by fan interaction and participation in small print networks unique to genre fiction in mid-century American and English literature. Moderate toning and edge wear; scattered handling creases and minor staple oxidation; text and illustrations remain clear and complete in the photographed copies. Overall good condition. A thirteen year record of science fiction and fantasy writing, debate, and publishing outside the commercial press.
