Kennedy, John F. Group of eight black and white press photographs from September 1963 documenting President Kennedy’s presentation of the Distinguished Service Medal to retired United States Air Force General Emmett O’Donnell Jr. at the White House. The ceremony took place on September 6, 1963, less than three months before Kennedy’s assassination, and honored O’Donnell after his tenure as Commander in Chief of Pacific Air Forces. Kennedy’s remarks cited O’Donnell’s World War II service, including his leadership of the first B 29 raid on Tokyo, and his subsequent service during the Korean War. Senator Barry Goldwater was among the members of Congress Kennedy explicitly invited forward during the ceremony.

Eight different black and white press photographs, September 1963. One photograph is stamped on the verso “White House 6 Sep. 1963 Abbie Rowe,” identifying White House photographer Abbie Rowe and the date of the ceremony. One image shows Kennedy pinning the Distinguished Service Medal on four star General Emmett O’Donnell’s uniform; others show Kennedy standing beside O’Donnell with administration officials and guests in the background, including Barry Goldwater in several views. Official Kennedy Library records confirm that the September 6 ceremony took place at the White House and identify Secretary of the Air Force Eugene M. Zuckert as a participant.

The photographs preserve several views of a single presidential ceremony rather than only the formal medal presentation, recording the positioning of Kennedy, O’Donnell, members of Congress, and administration officials during an official White House event. Their September 1963 date also places them within the final months of Kennedy’s presidency and during Goldwater’s emergence as a leading contender for the 1964 Republican presidential nomination. All photographs are in near fine condition. A focused group of White House press images documenting Kennedy’s recognition of a senior Air Force commander and including two figures who would occupy opposing poles of American political memory after 1963.
