[Sci-Fi][Zines] Three issues of Outworlds, a notable fanzine edited and published by Bill Bowers from North Canton, Ohio. Outworlds was one of the most respected science fiction fanzines of the 1970s, known for its literary seriousness, professional-grade graphic design, and contributions from leading voices in both professional and fan spheres. Each issue is a fusion of fan commentary, professional essays, and sophisticated visual art, featuring cover and interior artwork by major illustrators such as Stephen E. Fabian and Brian Sultzter. These issues document a critical moment in 1970s science fiction fandom, with contributions by and about Hugo winners, major editors, and influential thinkers.

[1] Outworlds No. 20 (Second Quarter 1974). Cover by Dan Steffan. Includes “The Four Lives of Sterling Lanier” by Piers Anthony, art folios and commentary by Fabian, and critical pieces by Poul Anderson, Greg Benford, and Ted White. This issue is notable for its graphic quality and design innovations, setting a new visual standard in fanzines.

[2] Outworlds No. 23 (Fifth Anniversary Issue, First Quarter 1975). This landmark issue features essays such as “Russia’s Defeat and Occupation, 1952–1960” by Patrick H. McGuire and “Dirts & Smut from Waste Paper” by Grant Canfield & friends. Includes a major career retrospective on John Brunner by Joe De Bolt and artwork from Nicola Cuti, Terry Austin, and others. The anniversary framing adds retrospective gravitas to its editorial scope.

[3] Outworlds Nos. 28/29 (Double Issue, 1976). A dense double issue featuring Joe Haldeman (“The Ballad of Stan Long”), Robert A.W. Lowndes, Jodie Offutt, Andrew J. Offutt, Neal Wilgus, Gregory Benford (“Some Days…”), and Susan Wood (“Energuwoman”). Contains a fannish symposium on writing by Dave Locke, alongside comics criticism, a midwestern convention report, and a wide-ranging interview with Robert Shea. Art by Vincent DiFate, Brian Sultzter, and others.

Uniformly in very good condition. Each issue demonstrates the style of 1970s science fiction fanzine production, where professional authors and artists collaborated in the amateur press tradition.
