Maoist China PRC Propaganda Booklet Set Glorifying Chairman Mao and the Chinese Communist Party, 1970-76

Book

[Post-Revolution China][Communism] PRC Cultural Revolution propaganda set of 10 small-format lianhuanhua (graphic novel) booklets issued by the PRC propaganda press system between 1970 and 1976, carrying Mao quotations, war narratives, and model heroes for mass circulation during the Cultural Revolution. Cover titles include Landmine Warfare, Great Victory on Highway No. 9, Battle on the Plain, Little Soldier Zhang Ga, Little Hero Yu Lai, Lei Feng, New Battle, Marching South, Fighting North, Dong Cunrui, and Qiu Shaoyun, Hero of Collectivism. The political language in the pictured pages states the program directly: “The army and the people are the foundation of victory,” “Revolutionary war is a war of the masses; only by mobilizing the masses can war be carried on, and only by relying on the masses can war be carried on,” and “Strengthen discipline, and the revolution will be invincible.” Another page calls for international struggle in the language of the period, “People of the world, unite and defeat the American aggressors and all their running dogs!,” while Little Hero Yu Lai praises its child protagonist as “You really are our little hero.”

Group of 10 illustrated propaganda comic booklets published in the People’s Republic of China between 1970 and 1976. Each approximately 4 x 5 inches and between about 70 and 200 pages each. Published by Shanghai People’s Press, People’s Fine Arts Publishing House, Zhejiang People’s Press, Shaanxi People’s Press, Hebei People’s Press, and Fujian People’s Press. The set preserves both PRC propaganda iconography and text, including passages reading “The great heroic spirit of collectivism and internationalism of Qiu Shaoyun will shine forever,” followed by a call for workers, peasants, soldiers, revolutionary intellectuals, Red Guards, and Little Red Guards to advance along the revolutionary road guided by Mao.

Issued by provincial and municipal people’s presses in very large print runs and at low cover prices, these booklets show how the Cultural Revolution propaganda system condensed approved revolutionary subjects into durable, inexpensive reading matter for repeated everyday use. War against Japan, civil war memory, Korean War language, revolutionary model figures, and children’s hero narratives are all routed here through the same small pictorial format, making the group a compact record of how political doctrine was standardized across different presses and local editorial units. Overall clean, complete, and in very good condition. As a set, these booklets preserve the language, scale, and material form through which Cultural Revolution political instruction entered ordinary reading life.
