The four issues included are Spring 1979 (Volume 1, No. 1), Summer 1979, (Volume 1, No. 2), Winter 1979 (Volume 1, No. 3), and Fall 1980 (No. 4). Staple bound pictorial wrappers. Each have approximately 28 pages. Each measure 8.5" x 11". The Gay Books Bulletin was edited by Wayne Dynes, with associate editor Jim Levin and contributions from other scholars and activists. The publication reviewed a diverse range of books, from academic studies on sexuality and gender to contemporary fiction and historical analyses. Reviews featured in these issues include works by major LGBTQ+ authors such as Christopher Isherwood, Edmund White, and John Rechy, as well as critical examinations of figures like E.M. Forster and Quentin Crisp. Additionally, the bulletin engaged with broader social issues such as anti-pornography crusades, homophobia in literature, and the legal status of homosexuality in different countries. The bulletin also contained original essays and articles addressing topics such as gay liberation, historical attitudes toward homosexuality, and ongoing research in queer studies. Contributors examined themes including censorship, the portrayal of LGBTQ+ figures in literature, and the intersection of homosexuality and politics. Some issues included discussions on landmark legal cases affecting LGBTQ+ rights, as well as reflections on cultural and artistic movements within the gay and lesbian community. As a publication of the Gay Academic Union, the Gay Books Bulletin played a significant role in fostering intellectual discourse around LGBTQ+ topics at a time when mainstream academia largely ignored or marginalized such subjects. These issues represent an important moment in the history of LGBTQ+ scholarship and activism, highlighting the efforts of scholars and writers to document, analyze, and celebrate queer literature and culture.
