Photograph

Vietnam War civilian life press photograph archive, ca. 1960s–1970s, documents the lived experiences of South Vietnamese civilians during one of the central conflicts of the Cold War. The photographs record the humanitarian consequences of the war, including civilian displacement, refugee transport, wartime labor mobilization, religious protest, and the destruction of homes and infrastructure. Several images depict refugees and families gathered for evacuation or transport, illustrating the large-scale population displacement that occurred as fighting expanded across South Vietnam. Other photographs show Buddhist religious activity and protest scenes, reflecting the role of Buddhist organizations and students in political demonstrations that shaped the social climate of South Vietnam during the war.

Archive of twenty vintage black-and-white silver gelatin press photographs, South Vietnam, ca. 1960s–1970s, ranging in size from approximately 5 × 7 inches to 11 × 14 inches, with numerous prints retaining original press captions, editorial notes, or printed articles on the margins or verso. The photographs depict a wide range of civilian and wartime scenes. Several images show large groups of refugees boarding or gathered around boats and transport vessels, suggesting evacuation or relocation during periods of military activity. One photograph shows U.S. Marines evacuating Vietnamese civilians, including women and children, by helicopter, while another image captures hundreds of refugees crowded along a boat’s edge reaching for water. A number of photographs document rural labor and agricultural work, including civilians digging canals or working irrigation trenches, suggesting wartime infrastructure and development projects. Other images portray Vietnamese civilians and children interacting with soldiers, and several photographs show young children and families in rural settings, highlighting the presence of civilian life amid the conflict. A photograph of Buddhist worshippers kneeling before a seated Buddha statue illustrates religious practice during the war, while additional images record urban destruction and smoke rising from buildings following military strikes.

Photographs range from 5 × 7 inches to 11 × 14 inches, with several prints exhibiting editorial crop marks and newsroom annotations consistent with press photography prepared for newspaper publication. Minor edge wear and light handling marks appear on some prints, with occasional creasing and editorial markings visible on the recto and verso. Overall very good condition. Together the photographs form a concentrated visual record of the civilian dimension of the Vietnam War, documenting displacement, refugee transport, religious activity, rural labor, and the destruction and rebuilding of communities during one of the defining geopolitical conflicts of the twentieth century.
