[Mexican-American War] [Art] Landing of the Troops at Vera Cruz. Philadelphia: Wagner & McGuigan. 1848. Measures 14" x 19.75". Print measures 12" x 18.25". Though the artist of this colored print is unknown, it seems to be based on the original lithograph from A Pictorial History of Mexico and the Mexican War by John Frost, 1848. The vibrant painting depicts a myriad of U.S. soldiers stationed on the shore of Veracruz, Mexico, several canons have been loaded on shore and a raised American flag. In the background are several ships and small rowboats where more American soldiers make their way to the beach. The American siege took place from 1946-1948, following the 1845 American annexation of Texas, which Mexico still considered its territory. Subsequently this chromolithograph was printed during the final year of the invasion, after the signing of the Guadalupe Hidalgo Treaty which granted the U.S. ownership of Texas. The image was made by 19 century chromolithography, where each color was printed by a separate stone. Framed in a waxed wooden frame, behind glass, backed in brown craft paper and has a horizontal wire hanging. The bottom two corners seem to be clipped or folded on the margins. Some mild fading and original creasing from folds. Overall very good condition.Item #21002
