Groundbreaking Mexican LGBTQ Film Poster "El Lugar Sin Limites"
Broadside
[LGBTQ][Latino, Chicano, Mexico][Film and Entertainment] El Lugar Sin Límites. Original promotional poster, 1978. Large color lobby card on glossy paper. Poster for the groundbreaking Mexican film El Lugar Sin Límites (The Place Without Limits), directed by Arturo Ripstein and based on the novel by José Donoso. Set in a decaying bordello in rural Mexico, the film centers around La Manuela, a gender-nonconforming drag performer and sex worker, and her daughter La Japonesita, who both fall in love with the same man. This narrative of queer desire, generational tension, and social marginalization is widely regarded as one of the most powerful cinematic portrayals of LGBTQ+ identity in Latin American film. The poster features a striking illustrated image of La Manuela in full flamenco regalia, framed against a vibrant magenta background, juxtaposed with a central photograph capturing an erotic moment between characters, visually emphasizing the film’s themes of gender fluidity, desire, and repression. The tagline reads, “La Manuela es el padre de la Japonesita, ambos practican el mismo oficio y desean al mismo hombre” ("La Manuela is the father of the Japonesita, both practice the same trade and desire the same man"), making explicit the film’s queer thematic core. Edge wear with some creasing and paper loss to the lower left and right margins. Surface abrasions to the lower portion, not affecting legibility. Overall good condition. An important artifact of queer Latin American cinema, this poster captures the radical subversion and poignancy of El Lugar Sin Límites, a film that challenged norms of gender and sexuality during a period of intense social conservatism in Mexico.Item #22200
