The World of Jose Luis Cuevas, 1969 Art Book on Mexican Modernist Artist

First Edition

El Mundo De Jose Luis Cuevas (The World of Jose Luis Cuevas). Bilingual Edition. Mexico City: Galeria de Arte Misrachi, 1969. First edition hardcover. 43 page essay on Cuevas's body of work by Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes printed side by side in Spanish and English, with 71 plates following. Measures 11" x 14.5". Tan cloth covers in original unclipped dust jacket. Mexican artist Jose Luis Cuevas was a Modernist artist and maverick in the 20th century Mexican art scene. Includes a sprawling essay by Fuentes where he analyzes Cuevas work in its historical context and draws out some of its philosophical underpinnings. Fuentes writes, "Cuevas with his vehement insistence on including the other, the alien, the erratic and for projecting toward that infinite elsewhere a new appearance that can only be our own. Cuevas who paints because he wants to recognize in the other that which he loves. Cuevas who completes the figurative cycle of our origins; daring to appear, giving himself a body, and a face. In this way, Cuevas represents a new culture, a new sensibility born of discontent with itself and with its insufficiencies." 71 plates illustrated in black and white give an attractive and thorough look at Cuevas' body of work in the latter half of the book. In very good condition overall.
