The Stones Awake: A Novel of Mexico by Carleton Beals

First Edition

[Chicano] [Literature] Beals, Carleton. The Stones Awake: A Novel of Mexico. Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1936. First Edition Hardcover with Dust Jacket. 464 pages. Measures 5.75" x 8.5". An epic panorama of revolution-torn Mexico seen through the eyes of Esperanza, from the little mountain village of Milpa Verde. The whole story of Mexico is epitomized in this little village and its struggle for land, education, and freedom after centuries of enslavement. When revolution grips the nation, many men and boys are pressed into the armies which overrun Mexico, and Esperanza herself is uprooted. Beals was an American journalist, writer, historian, and political activist with a special interest in Latin America and in the 1920s, he was part of a group of intellectuals, artists, and journalists in Mexico City. He remained an active, prolific, and politically engaged leftist journalist during the 1960s, when he supported the Fair Play for Cuba Committee and was considered a hero to the young people of Cuba. Dust jacket has wear around edges and top and bottom of back cover. Colors are still vibrant, textblock is tight. Overall, in very good condition.
