Based on his own experiences as a Mexican American growing up in New Mexico, Tortuga is a fictional novel inspired by an event that occurred in his own life as a child sustaining injuries after a pool accident. The novel examines the concept of healing not merely as a physical recovery, but as a spiritual process of finding one's roots, inner strength, and community belonging.
