Western Cowboy Photo Archive, Circa 1870s-1920s

Photo Archive

Archive of 20 original photographs of Western cowboys, many riding their horse and armed. Some are crossing treacherous Western terrain on horseback and others are with Native Americans, or competing in a rodeo . A mixture of photo formats, from tintypes to albumen to silver gelatin photographs, black and white or sepia toned. Ranging from approximately the entire western era of 1880s to 1920s. The cowboys are clearly armed in five of the photos, most often with pistols, but one large albumen shows a cowboy on horseback with a rifle laid across his lap. Another studio photo shows a well dressed gentleman who nonetheless is brandishing two pistols. Ten of the photos depict cowboys with or on their horses, at ranches, livery stables, feed lots, and other fixtures of Western cattle raising life. One photo shows a group of cowboys branding a young cow, with a caption on verso reading: "Brother Manzer Branding his Cow". A few photos show the cowboys traversing difficult terrain, including one shot of a cowboy and a Native American family in traditional dress in the middle of rocky badlands. Another captioned real photo postcard circa 1910 shows several cowboys on horseback crossing a large river, maybe the Rio Grande, one with the water up to his horse's neck. In very good condition overall.
