Unidentified photographer. Integrated men’s football team photograph, 1950s, documents African American athletic participation and coaching presence in organized football during the decade after professional football’s formal reintegration in 1946. The image supports research into race, athletics, coaching authority, and the uneven integration of American football in the postwar period, when Black players were increasingly visible on the field while opportunities in coaching and institutional leadership remained limited. The NFL had no Black players from 1934 through 1945, before Kenny Washington, Woody Strode, Marion Motley, and Bill Willis helped reintegrate professional football in 1946.

The image shows 38 subjects, including 10 African American players and four coaches, one of whom is African American and stands prominently at the front of the group while the other coaches stand in the rear row. The team poses in front of a brick building, shoulder to shoulder, with plastic helmets arranged on the low wall before them and a leather football placed at center. The players appear college-aged, with clear facial expressions and varied postures, giving the photograph documentary value beyond a routine team portrait.

The photograph belongs to the visual record of football’s racial transition after World War II, when integration advanced unevenly across professional, collegiate, and regional athletics. Its significance rests especially in the visible presence of an African American coach within an integrated team setting, a leadership position less commonly foregrounded than Black athletic participation itself.
