Two CDV, one of Napoleon Bonaparte, and one of his wife Josephine; Each 4" x 2.5" inches. Both CDVs are from paintings as Napoleon died before the invention of photography. Napoleon's CDV is from a painting by David and published by Emile Desmaisons .The image of Josephine does not have a photographer or publisher stamp on verso. These 2 images were made from famous paintings Napoleon and his wife at the peak of his power. They both wear crowns and are dressed in imperial finery. The photo of Josephine has the caption, "Imperatrice Josephine", while the portrait photo of Napoleon is uncaptioned. He wears a golden wreath-like crown with robes. Napoleon was coronated as Emperor of the French in 1804 and Josephine and Napoleon were married from 1796 to 1810. CDV's were popular in the 1860's and these were produced during the rein of Napoleon III, when he was capitalizing on Napoleon's I achievements to continue the dynasty. These two CDV's are in very good condition overall.
