Philippa Strachey on Equal Pay, Married Women’s Employment, and Women’s Rights, 1935
Ephemera and pamphlets
Strachey, Philippa. Memorandum on the Position of English Women in Relation to that of English Men, 1935, compares the political, legal, religious, economic, and educational position of women and men in England and Wales during the interwar period. Prepared under the recommendation of the Council for the Representation of Women in the League of Nations, the report records both gains already secured and areas in which formal or practical inequality remained. Its central concerns include the occupations open to women, equal pay, and the right of married women to remain in employment, placing the memorandum within contemporary campaigns over women’s citizenship and economic independence.Strachey, Philippa. Memorandum on the Position of English Women in Relation to that of English Men. Westminster: London & National Society for Women’s Service, 1935. 31 pages. Blue paper wrappers. The report compares women’s and men’s rights across political participation, law, religion, employment, and education, distinguishing areas of legislative progress from continuing restrictions. Particular attention is given to occupational barriers, wage inequality, and limitations affecting married women’s employment, while the involvement of the Council for the Representation of Women in the League of Nations places the document within an international discussion of women’s legal status.
Published after the extension of equal parliamentary voting rights to British women in 1928, the memorandum shows that political enfranchisement did not resolve broader inequalities in employment and economic life. Strachey’s tabulation of remaining differences between women and men provides a contemporary record of the unfinished legislative and workplace agenda of the British women’s movement in the 1930s. Toning and foxing to wrappers, with a crease to the lower right corner of the front wrapper; overall Good Condition.
