Manuscripts & Autographs

De Morgan, Augustus. Autograph mathematical manuscript signed. [ca. mid-19th century]. One page, approx. 4.5" x 7", written in ink on laid paper. Signed "Augustus De Morgan" at lower center.

Signed mathematical formula in the hand of British logician and mathematician Augustus De Morgan (1806–1871), containing symbolic notation and differential expressions likely pertaining to functions of several variables and higher-order derivatives. The notations suggest work in the calculus of variations or functional equations, areas where De Morgan made foundational contributions in the 19th century. De Morgan was a seminal figure in the history of logic and mathematics, best remembered for articulating De Morgan’s Laws, which express the relationship between conjunction and disjunction in formal logic. He also coined the term “mathematical induction” and was instrumental in promoting formalism in mathematical proofs.

Beyond his mathematical innovations, De Morgan played a key role in mentoring Ada Lovelace, the world’s first computer programmer, guiding her studies in advanced mathematics as she collaborated with Charles Babbage on the Analytical Engine. His advocacy for rigorous logical structures directly influenced the theoretical foundations of computer science. Light age toning with moderate staining to the upper half and center of the sheet, primarily above the signature; faint horizontal fold across the center. Signature remains bold and fully legible. Overall very good condition. Scarce autograph manuscript reflecting De Morgan’s legacy as a pioneer of mathematics and the emerging computational sciences.
