[Imperialism] [Freedom Fighter] Mahatma Gandhi portrait broadside from Punjabi Press and International News press photograph of Gandhi with Jawaharlal Nehru at the Congress camp in Faizpur, the first Indian National Congress session held in a rural setting and closely tied to village industries and agrarian politics. The photograph preserves Gandhi within Congress publicity at a key nationalist gathering, while the Punjabi Press broadside reflects the inexpensive devotional print tradition through which his likeness circulated widely beyond the news cycle. Set of two Gandhi items, consisting of one International News press photograph with typed and clipped caption material on the verso and one small printed Gandhi broadside issued by Punjabi Press, Sadar Bazar, Delhi.

The print belongs to the popular bazaar portrait tradition through which Gandhi’s image circulated in devotional and commemorative form. Together, the items preserve Gandhi in both international press photography and mass produced popular portraiture. Edge wear, toning, and staining to both items; the broadside with dampstaining and lower margin losses, the press photo with editorial markings and handling wear. Overall fair to good condition.
