French Feminist Newspaper Archive of L’Heure de la Femme Advocating Women’s Suffrage and Educational Reform, 1927

Archive

Archive of five issues of L’Heure de la Femme documenting feminist political organization, intellectual activism, and women’s reform movements in interwar France. The material records French feminist campaigns for suffrage, educational reform, legal equality, and women’s political participation through independent print culture and ideological publishing networks. Issued by the Union de Pensée Féminine and edited by Lydie Martial, the newspaper served as a collective forum for feminist societies advocating secular education, maternal welfare initiatives, and expanded civic rights for women during a period when French women remained disenfranchised nationally. The publication circulated political philosophy, reform campaigns, and arguments for women’s liberation through legal and moral claims. The archive provides primary-source evidence for interwar French feminism, women’s suffrage movements, feminist print culture, and the intellectual history of women’s political activism in twentieth-century France.

Archive consists of five folio-format issues of L’Heure de la Femme published in Paris by L’Union de Pensée Féminine in 1927. Offset printed on newsprint in French, each issue comprises a single folded sheet printed on both sides as issued. Included are Nos. 79–80, 81, 83, 86, and 87. The newspaper is subtitled “Organe des Sociétés Féministes et Féminines Françaises de Pensée et d’Action,” identifying its role as a coordinating publication for French feminist organizations. Each issue prominently features editorials by Lydie Martial from the recurring series “Être Femme?” examining womanhood through philosophical, political, and sociological frameworks. [1] Nos. 79–80 (January–February 1927). Includes “Quelques Grandes Oubliées de l’Histoire,” “L’Amour Humain en Péril,” and discussions promoting “Le Parti du Cœur,” the organization’s political initiative advocating women’s moral and intellectual leadership within public life. [2] No. 81 (March 1927). Features “Que suis-je pour la Vie?” alongside articles addressing institutional discrimination and legal inequities affecting women in educational and civic settings. [3] No. 83 (May 1927). Contains “Que suis-je au regard de l’Homme?” critiquing patriarchal social structures while discussing the Union de Pensée Féminine’s educational programs and concerns regarding the “démoralisation de la jeunesse.” [4] No. 86 (July–August–September 1927). Expanded triple issue devoted to the organization’s political platform, including feminist manifestos, appeals directed toward members of parliament, and declarations concerning women’s autonomy, legal recognition, and civic equality. [5] No. 87 (November 1927). Continues publication of organizational manifestos and includes “L’Égalité des Maîtres devant l’Éducation Humaine,” arguing for educational parity and condemning institutional barriers restricting women’s advancement.

These issues record an interwar French feminist current that combined suffrage activism and legal reform with philosophical arguments concerning morality, education, spirituality, and social authority. The publication insisted on women’s intellectual leadership and civic legitimacy at a time when French women would not achieve national voting rights until 1944. The archive also records organized feminist communication networks operating through independent newspapers outside mainstream political institutions. L’Heure de la Femme appears infrequently in commerce and is scarce in major bibliographic references. General toning, folds, scattered creasing, marginal tears, and small chips consistent with fragile newsprint production; all issues complete and legible. Overall good to very good condition. A documentary archive of interwar French feminist political publishing and women’s intellectual activism.
