First Edition
[Transgender]Stoller, Robert J. Sex and Gender: On the Development of Masculinity and Femininity. New York: Science House, 1968. First edition. 383 pages. Original black cloth binding with author, title, and publisher stamped on spine. Original dustjacket, white with black text with image of a Rorschach-style inkblot evoking two back-to-back profiles, one slightly masculine and the other slightly feminine. The first book by psycholanalytic theorist, Professor of Psychology, and gender studies researcher Dr. Robert Stoller, in which Stoller proposed the now popular theory of gender identity - the understanding of one's personal sense of gender separate from sex assigned at birth. In the book Stoller hypothesizes that "the sense of core gender identity...is derived from three sources: the anatomy and physiology of the genitalia; the attitudes of parents, siblings and peers toward the child's gender role; and a biological force that may more or less modify the attitudinal (environmental) forces." In other words, that both nature and nurture play a role in gender identity. This groundbreaking theory emerged at a time when gender non-conformity and transgenderism were highly stigmatized in the United States. The 50s and 60s saw an early push for understanding and awareness of transgenderism from activists like Christine Jorgensen, Virginia Prince, and Marsha P. Johnson and researchers including Stoller, Alfred Kinsey, and John Money. Though some of Stoller's theories have become outdated, his work nonetheless remains vital to modern gender and sexuality studies. Foxing and light wear to dustjacket, pen marks to front end-paper. Overall very good condition. The first book by pioneering gender identity theorist Robert Stoller.Item #20772
