Seven original press photographs issued by Associated Press, Detroit Free Press, and Detroit News between 1976 and 1980; six black and white and one sepia toned; sizes range from approximately 9 x 7 inches to 11 x 8 inches; captions present on recto and verso. Four images show Richards in active play, including a match at the John Wayne Tennis Club in Newport Beach, California, where she competed following her transition. Two off court images present Richards in formal styling, including one in which she holds a trophy and microphone after a tournament victory in San Diego in 1976. A later image from 1980 shows Richards courtside, wiping her face with a towel after a match, marking the closing phase of her competitive career.

These photographs correspond to a period in which questions of gender classification, medical authority, and athletic governance were increasingly contested in public arenas. Richards’s participation and legal challenge contributed to broader conversations that would continue to shape policies around gender in sport into the late twentieth and early twenty first centuries.
