Blacula Blaxploitation Film Original French Poster, 1972
Broadside
[Film & Entertainment] [Blaxploitation] CRAIN, William. Blacula Le Vampire Noir. 1973. Original Poster 23" x 32". Blacula is a 1972 blaxploitation horror film about an 18th century African prince, turned into a vampire by Dracula, who finds himself in modern day Los Angeles. The film is the first example of a Black vampire on film and was released to mixed reviews in the US, but was one of the top-grossing films of the year, a success for the young Black director William Crain making his feature film debut. This poster is the first French edition and was likely used in local theaters at the debut of the feature. The text is in French and shows a close up of Marshall of showing his fangs in the background with him biting his co-star Denise Nicholas in the foreground. The poster has original folds, a few pin holes where the poster was hung, minor creasing to edges, and minor staining. Overall very good condition. Blacula was followed by the sequel Scream Blacula Scream in 1973 and inspired a wave of blaxploitation-themed horror films. The film also features several gay characters. The film opened the door and paved the way for Black horror and Black horror directors.Item #20616
