Original Photograph of a group of 1960s Civil Rights Picketers in Massachusetts
Photograph
Original vintage photograph of three people marching against workplace discrimination in Massachusetts. 9" x 7.5". Black and white silver gelatin photograph. Original vintage photograph shows two men picketing the Wyman-Gordon metal components company for racial discrimination in 1964. Their signs read: "Racial Discrimination at Wyman-Gordon?", and the men appear to be trying to get the attention of a woman passing on the sidewalk. They're standing outside what looks like a company office, in all likelihood a corporateoffice of Wyman-Gordon, based on a door sign in the background. The president of Wyman-Gordon was Robert Stoddard, an opponent of the Civil Rights Act and founder of the right wing John Birch Society. In 1964, the firms only black employees were its janitors, which made it a point of focus for civil rights leader Abbie Hoffman who organized petitions with the Massachusetts Anti-Discrimination Commission and the U.S Air Force, one of Wyman-Gordon's biggest clients. In July of that year, the company agreed to change its hiring practices. This photo has a minor 0.25 inch paper loss at top left corner. Overall, in very good condition.Item #20438
