Two-toned red and orange dust jacket with a sketch of a man's face and white lettering; verso of dust jacket is white and displays the same sketch. Octavo. The novel centers upon the return of an African-American veteran of the Korean War who experiences "isolated ignorance, corruption, and brutality that persists in the South". He yearns to register to vote, only to be met with countless accounts of prejudices and brutality. Stamped on front free pastedown endpaper by Doubleday as a "personal reading copy for booksellers" and bears penciled markings on front flyleaf. Dust jacket shows minor signs of rubbing on the spine. Clean and bright pages, in very good condition.
