Primary-source photograph album documenting United States Navy service in the Pacific Theater during World War II, including operations associated with the aircraft carrier USS Princeton and the presence of American personnel in China and Japan. The album supports research into naval aviation, carrier-based operations, and the lived experience of servicemen across both combat and non-combat environments, including interactions with civilian populations in East Asia. USS Princeton, an Independence-class light aircraft carrier active in Pacific campaigns and credited with multiple battle engagements, anchors the album within the operational framework of U.S. naval air power during the later stages of the war.

Photograph album containing 139 silver gelatin photographs mounted on 49 leaves, circa 1944, with images ranging from approximately 3 x 2 to 9 x 6.75 inches. Photographs depict aircraft operations aboard USS Princeton, including fighter planes in flight, deck scenes with aircraft positioned for takeoff, and aerial views of port and coastal environments. Additional images document urban and harbor scenes in Tsingtao, China, as well as street-level views showing American servicemen in rickshaws, public spaces, and informal gatherings. The album includes group portraits of sailors, recreational scenes such as a boxing match observed by assembled personnel, and interactions between servicemen and local civilians, including one image of Chinese women operating a loom observed by U.S. personnel. Handwritten captions appear throughout, identifying locations and activities. Family photographs are interspersed among the wartime images.

The album documents the movement of American naval personnel across the Pacific and into East Asian urban centers during the final phase of World War II, when carrier-based air power played a central role in military operations and U.S. presence extended into occupied and allied regions. The combination of shipboard aviation scenes and onshore encounters provides visual evidence of both operational activity and everyday life within the Navy, including recreation, social interaction, and cross-cultural contact. Brown leather album with gilt map of the Hawaiian Islands and “Aloha Hawaii” on front cover; binding cracked but intact. Light sunning to some photographs; pages intact and stable. Overall very good condition. A comprehensive photographic record of U.S. naval aviation and personnel experience in the Pacific during World War II.
