First Edition

Wouk, Herman. The Winds of War, 1971. Uncorrected prepublication proof of Wouk's World War II novel, issued in advance of its first edition. Following the fictional American naval officer Victor "Pug" Henry and his family through the international crises preceding American entry into World War II, the novel combines military history, diplomacy, and domestic life with appearances by historical figures including Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Adolf Hitler. Wouk, who served in the United States Navy during the war and received the Pulitzer Prize for The Caine Mutiny in 1952, drew upon his military experience and historical research to develop a narrative extending from 1939 to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The novel was adapted into a television miniseries in 1983, starring Robert Mitchum as Victor Henry

Wouk, Herman. The Winds of War. Boston: Pocket Books, 1971. Uncorrected prepublication proof. 1,053 pages. Original yellow printed wrappers housed in protective plastic sleeves. An ownership signature appears on the endpaper. Produced before publication for editorial review and correction, the proof preserves a preliminary state of the text rather than the finished trade edition, which was published by Little, Brown and Company in November 1971.
The Winds of War was followed by War and Remembrance in 1978, extending the Henry family's experiences through the conclusion of World War II and incorporating the Holocaust and the Pacific campaigns. The 1983 television adaptation brought Wouk's historical narrative to a national television audience. This advance proof provides a prepublication textual state that may be compared with the finished novel to identify editorial revisions and production changes. Slight wrinkling to wrappers; ownership signature on endpaper. Very good condition.
