One African American Man and Four Women in Early University of Michigan Medical Class Photo, 1928
Photograph
Imperial size silver gelatin portraits of students and faculty at University of Michigan Medical School, including one African American man and four women among the students. 1928. This large photo measures 22 x 18 inches. Mounted to photographer's board. 82 student including four female students and one African American student. Photographed by Randall Studio. After fierce educational activism throughout the 19th century led to an increase the admission of women into medical schools at the turn of the century, the twentieth century saw a decline of women in the medical profession. Segregation laws during the 20th century barred African Americans from educational institutions and from white medical practices. This class photo dating to the 1920s documents small but significant diversity of medical students for the time. Small 1.5 inch tear to one corner barely affects on of the 82 images. Very small chips to side and top do not affect text or images. Very good condition.Item #18280
