Photographic archive of steam locomotives, freight cars, cabooses, shop interiors, and depot architecture in Colorado and Oakland, Maryland, many dated September 1974, as older railroad equipment was kept, repaired, displayed, and recorded after regular service. The Colorado images center on Denver and Rio Grande equipment, including D&RGW No. 346, built by Baldwin in 1881, and D&RG No. 583, built by Baldwin in 1890, later renumbered 683 and preserved at the Colorado Railroad Museum. The Maryland images include the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Station at Oakland, built in 1884 and listed on the National Register in 1974, the same year these photographs were made.

Photo archive of 56 silver gelatin photographs, 5 x 3 inches with negligible variation, Colorado and Oakland, Maryland, many dated September 1974. D&RGW No. 346 appears from the front and side, with its headlight, number plate, boiler front, lamps, pilot, cab, tender lettering, and a man standing beside the locomotive. Other views include D&RG No. 583 or later No. 683 in museum display; D&RGW No. 167 material, including a small structure marked “no agua”; caboose No. 207 with a boy standing in front of the painted number; locomotive No. 444 near industrial buildings; and a Coors refrigerator car lettered “Adolph Coors Golden, Colorado,” “ventilator,” “refrigerator,” and “A.D.C.X. 5400.” The Coors car corresponds to the museum’s No. 5400 refrigerator car, repainted to represent the billboard refrigerator cars used by Coors after Prohibition. Interior views include forklifts, cabinets, tanks, hoses, work benches, wheels, boilers, stored parts, and repair areas, not finished exhibit displays. The Oakland station photographs record the Queen Anne brick B&O depot with arched openings, platform canopy, ornamental brackets, and tower.

The archive includes restoration and preservation material for both railroad equipment and railroad buildings: No. 346 as a nineteenth-century narrow gauge locomotive under museum custody; No. 583 or 683 as a surviving standard gauge Rio Grande steam locomotive; caboose 207, the Coors refrigerator car, and shop interiors for freight, storage, and maintenance work; and the Oakland station as a working railroad building newly recognized as historic architecture in 1974. Light handling creases, and some silvering visible in the photographs. Overall good condition. A 1974 record of locomotives, rolling stock, shops, and depot buildings in railroad preservation.
