Travels in Mexico and Life Among the Mexicans, 1885
Book
[Travel] [Mexico] Ober, Frederick A. Travels in Mexico and Life Among the Mexicans. Boston: Estes and Lauriat, 1885. Revised Edition. Octavo. Original red cloth board with gilt titles on spine within silver-stamped panel; all edges gilt. Illustrated with over 150 engravings, including frontispiece “The Valley of Mexico.”A richly illustrated early travel narrative chronicling Frederick A. Ober’s extensive journeys through the Yucatán, Central and Southern Mexico, and the border states in the early 1880s, written at a pivotal moment of modernization and U.S. economic encroachment in the region. Ober, an American naturalist, explorer, and travel writer known for his ethnographic and ornithological studies, records his impressions of Mexican landscapes, indigenous communities, ruins, and colonial cities, weaving together scientific observation with romantic and often paternalistic commentary typical of late-19th-century travel literature. His vivid accounts of archaeological exploration at sites such as Uxmal and Palenque are among the earliest illustrated English-language depictions of Maya and Aztec architecture, drawn from his own sketches and contemporary photographic sources. First published in 1883 and here issued in its “Revised Edition,” Travels in Mexico exemplifies the intersection of travel writing and early American ethnography, situating Ober among a cohort of writers, John Lloyd Stephens, Desire Charnay, and Thomas Janvier, who popularized Central American archaeology for Western readers. Minor wear to head and tail of spine, endpapers faintly toned, otherwise bright and clean internally with tight binding. Overall very good condition. A near-fine copy of this visually and intellectually significant work of 19th-century American travel literature on Mexico.
