California Imperial Court Drag Balls Archive, 1977-82

Archive

[LGBTQ][Drag][Cross-Dressing] Archive of nine items relating to drag queen “coronations” and drag balls from the California Imperial Court System, one of the oldest and largest LGBTQ organizations in the world. Includes eight programs and one original color photograph. 1977–1982. This archive documents the ceremonial and social culture of California’s drag scene during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Comprising nine original printed programs and one color photograph from coronations and drag balls hosted by regional chapters of the Imperial Court System, including San Francisco, Visalia, Burlingame, Sacramento, and Los Angeles, this collection captures a critical moment in queer performance and community organizing prior to the peak of the AIDS crisis.

Founded in 1965 by pioneering drag performer and activist José Sarria, the Imperial Court System served as a nexus of gay social life, political solidarity, and mutual aid. These programs, produced for events such as “A Night at the Opera” (1978), “Baubles, Bangles and Beads” (1980), “Valentine Ball: An Evening in a Grecian Garden” (1980), and “Coronation ’82: An Evening in the Orient”, reflect a deeply organized, theatrically expressive network of queer royalty, featuring messages from reigning Empresses and Emperors, event lineups, illustrations, ads for local gay businesses, and dedications between courts from across California and beyond. Notable entries include the Coronation International Festival 1982 by the Imperial Pearl Court de San Joaquin, and Court of Wine & Roses: Coronation ’77 from Sonoma County, which reflects the deepening roots of LGBTQ civic life in smaller California communities. Includes one original color photograph of two court members in full regalia, sashes reading “Prince Charming” and “Princess”, posed in front of a streamer-covered throne.

All programs saddle-stapled, offset printed with decorative covers. Light handling wear, minor staple rust and some spotting or toning to a few programs, but overall very good condition. These documents not only celebrate gender performance, but also document a vibrant queer infrastructure of emotional support, regional kinship, and resistance against the pressures of assimilation and political hostility in the Reagan era. An archive of drag ephemera from the California chapters of the Imperial Court, preserving a vital record of queer visibility, resistance, and grassroots community-making in the late 20th century.
