First Appearance of Early Black Superhero Dr. Bill Foster in "The Avengers" 1966
First Edition
[African American][Comics] 1966 issue of The Avengers featuring the first appearance of Black hero Dr. Bill Foster, the man who would become Black Goliath. New York: Marvel Comics Group, September 1966. Staple-bound in original wrappers. The Avengers No. 32, “The Sign of the Serpent!”, featuring the debut appearance of Dr. William “Bill” Foster, an African American biochemist who would later become the superhero Black Goliath (first appearing in-costume in Power Man No. 24, 1975). Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Don Heck, with inking by Frank Giacoia and lettering by Artie Simek. Dr. Foster debuts here in a supporting role as a scientific consultant to Hank Pym (Giant-Man), assisting in advanced biochemical experimentation and research into cellular size manipulation. Pictured in multiple panels and identified by name, Foster is characterized as a confident, sharply dressed professional working within the Avengers’ laboratory infrastructure. His introduction was significant at a time when African American representation in mainstream superhero comics was exceedingly rare; Foster’s eventual transition to Black Goliath would make him one of Marvel’s earliest Black heroes to headline his own title. This issue also includes prominent appearances by Captain America, Hawkeye, Wasp, and Goliath, as the Avengers battle the Sons of the Serpent—a villainous organization with white supremacist overtones. The story, though costumed and fantastical, contains early allegorical engagement with racial hatred and the dangers of organized bigotry, marking a subtle but notable turn in Marvel’s willingness to depict social issues. Dr. Bill Foster’s character trajectory would evolve through key story arcs involving his alter ego Black Goliath, later becoming Giant-Man and appearing in multiple Avengers team-ups and crossover events. Light wear and ex-libris stamp to cover, inner pages clear and vibrant. In overall very good condition. Published at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, this issue introduced readers to an intelligent and grounded Black character who would later make great strides in representation as one of Marvel's first Black heroes to headline his own series.
