[African American] [Civil Rights] The first African American justice of the Supreme Court and civil rights activist, Thurgood Marshall, press release photo archive. 3 silver gelatin press release photographs from the 1960s-1970s. All measure approximately 8" x 10". Each have their original publisher's article printed on the margins or en verso. As a champion of Black rights, he was given the nickname of "Mr. Civil Rights", with almost 30 Supreme Court victories advocating for Black Americans. One photograph shows Marshall behind president Lyndon B. Johnson, as the president announces the appointment of Marshall's official title and role in the Supreme Court. Another group photograph shows Marshall alongside the other Supreme Court justices. The article, dated January 25th, 1971, discusses the Supreme Court allowing a Black reverend, James Gnoppi, to a second trial following a curfew violation in Milwaukee during the 1968 civil rights demonstrations. Finally, the last photograph shows a Marshall speaking mid sentence on his denouncement of Black militant groups during a statement at Dillard University in New Orleans. Some minor edge wear and original publisher's markings. Overall very good condition. An advocate for racial justice amidst food security, prison sentences, and segregation, through the courts, he ensured that Black people enjoyed the rights and responsibilities of full citizenship.Item #20879
