Includes story on Harold Evans, the Philadelphia attorney appointed by the United Nations to be the first Special Municipal Commissioner for Jerusalem on May 13, 1948. Headline reads, "American Quaker named mayor of Jerusalem as hour for end of British mandate over Palestine draws near; Jews prepare to proclaim their new Palestine state at moment British terminate authority; Arabs reported posed for invasion.” The League of Nations Mandate for Palestine following World War I would end as the Palestinian war raged, expelling half of prewar Palestine's Arab population from their homes.
