International Mourning and Political Leadership at JFK Funeral Documented in Vernacular Photographs, November 1963
Photograph
John F. Kennedy funeral photograph archive, November 1963, documents the state funeral of the United States president at a moment of Cold War tension and global political visibility. Produced three days after Kennedy’s assassination, the images record the ceremonial procession and the unprecedented international presence of political leaders, including Lyndon B. Johnson, Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Charles de Gaulle, Emperor Haile Selassie, Anastas Mikoyan, Prince Philip, and Konrad Adenauer. The gathering of representatives from more than ninety countries underscores the geopolitical significance of Kennedy’s presidency and death, while the visual focus on official vehicles, procession order, and military honors situates the event within established state funeral traditions. One image captures the president’s casket carried on a horse drawn caisson, draped in the American flag and escorted by a Marine Corps Honor Guard, while another includes the riderless horse “Black Jack,” a military symbol used to honor fallen commanders in chief.Archive of 37 original silver gelatin photographs taken in Washington, D.C., on November 25, 1963, each measuring approximately 3.5 x 3.5 inches and datestamped “Nov 63” on the recto. Photographs were taken by seminary student Jack Blonski and include multiple images of the funeral procession, attending dignitaries, and surrounding landmarks such as the Washington Monument and the White House. Several prints bear captions on the verso identifying world leaders present at the ceremony. The sequence follows the events of the day, including the procession following the Requiem Mass at St. Matthew’s Cathedral and the burial at Arlington National Cemetery.
Taken during a defining moment in twentieth century American and global history, the archive captures both the formal structure of state mourning and the international diplomatic context of Kennedy’s presidency. The presence of leaders from allied and rival nations alike reflects the symbolic weight of the funeral as a global event, while the military elements of the procession reinforce the office of the presidency within national and ceremonial frameworks. The photographs provide a cohesive visual record of the day’s events from ground level perspective. Minor wear consistent with handling; images remain clear and well preserved. Overall very good.
