Archive of nine silver gelatin photographs documenting Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday (1953) and War and Peace (1956), spanning the period in which she moved from her Academy Award winning breakout role as Princess Anne to the large scale adaptation of Tolstoy directed by King Vidor. Roman Holiday, filmed in Rome with Gregory Peck and Eddie Albert, received ten Academy Award nominations and brought Hepburn the Academy Award for Best Actress; three years later she played Natasha Rostova opposite Henry Fonda and her then husband Mel Ferrer in War and Peace.

Nine black and white silver gelatin photographs, eight dating from War and Peace and one depicting a scene from Roman Holiday. Seven photographs measure 8 x 10 inches and show Hepburn in 1956 in full costume on the set of War and Peace, in which she played Natasha Rostova. One photograph measuring 4 x 6 inches shows Hepburn and Mel Ferrer arriving at Heathrow for the film premiere of War and Peace; the production was the only feature film in which Hepburn and Ferrer appeared together in substantial starring roles. One 8 x 10 inch photograph shows Hepburn as Princess Anne bidding farewell to Gregory Peck as reporter Joe Bradley and Eddie Albert as photographer Irving Radovich in Roman Holiday, preserving a recognizable scene from the film that established Hepburn as a major Hollywood performer.

The photographs record two distinct stages of Hepburn’s early screen career: the location based romantic comedy Roman Holiday and the international historical production War and Peace. AFI records Roman Holiday as photographed and recorded entirely in Rome, while War and Peace placed Hepburn at the center of a major 1956 adaptation of Tolstoy alongside Fonda and Ferrer. All nine photographs are in very good condition, with some showing minor wear or very small stains. The group preserves both studio production imagery and premiere documentation from two films central to Hepburn’s emergence as an international screen actress.
