Study on Working Women's Health in WW.II

Pamphlet

Original Pamphlet titled "Why Is She Away? The Problem of Sickness Among Women in the Industry". London: His Majesty’s Stationary Office, 1945. 8.25” x 5.5” inches. The pamphlet includes statistics and studies regarding women’s absences from work with an interest on how much time is lost cumulatively due to illness. Because women entered the workforce in large numbers as part of an American World War II effort, the labor market went through a dramatic shift. This publication is based on investigation carried out by the board with special reference to sickness absence among 4,500 women in five representative munition factories during the last six months of 1942. In a further investigation, which is discussed in the second part of the pamphlet, 500 women, 200 from the first and 100 from each of the other three factories, were interviewed. These women described how they thought their health was affected by factory and home conditions and by their personal problems. An interesting look at women’s labor being segmented from the beginning as less productive and less desirable than men’s. Small tear to bottom edge, some wrinkling to front and back covers. Overall very good condition.
