[Woman Suffrage] “Heads I win, tails you lose.” Paperback with original wrapper, 4 pages. (A political forecast addressed to those suffragists who flatter themselves that adult suffrage is possible before the principle of Woman Suffrage has been admitted in practice by first granting the Vote to Women “on the same terms as it is, or may be, granted to men”). This scarce Pamphlet fights back against an anti-suffrage speech given by Prime Minister H. H. Asquith in “1916 or 1917” on the women’s vote and includes a rather dry & sarcastic introduction, commending Asquith as “the very genius of the nation” for taking such as “progressive and democratic point of view,” and also includes commentary on points in Asquith’s speech, including an important legal technical question: “whether the word ‘person’ should or should not include women.” Asquith calls on his fellow ministers to “wait and see” on the issue of women’s suffrage and to exclude women from the legal definition of “person” in British Parliament. He argues that since brave, war veteran, colonial subjects in India do not have the rights to vote, British women surely should not. It closes with a bolded statement “…and Women were never thought of again save as amiable and over-worked beasts of burden.” This pamphlet records one of the ways in which progressive activists responded to government officials, who worked to obstruct their causes.
