San Francisco and San Jose Earthquake Destruction Photo Archive of 55 images 1906
Photograph
San Francisco earthquake photo archive depicting the destruction caused by the April 18, 1906 earthquake and the fires that burned through the city afterward. The disaster killed thousands, left much of San Francisco in ruins, and displaced a massive urban population into parks, camps, and temporary shelters. Commercial postcards circulated quickly after the catastrophe, turning collapsed civic buildings, burned commercial streets, and refugee encampments into mailed evidence of a national disaster.Photo archive of 55 black and white real photo postcards, color printed postcards, and two larger lithographic prints, most measuring approximately 3.5" x 5.5", San Francisco and San Jose, California, 1906. Identified San Francisco scenes include the Emporium Building, City Hall from Hayes and Market Streets, the Ferry Building, the St. Francis Hotel ruins, the Call Building vicinity, Montgomery and Market Streets, Geary Street, California and Battery Streets, burning wharves along San Francisco Bay, and refugees in Jefferson Square. San Jose views include the Post Office, St. Patrick’s Church, Hotel St. James, Phelan Building, Hobson’s Store, Elks’ Hall, Mayer Bros.’ store, Bank of San Jose, and the First M.E. Church. Several cards retain handwritten notes, postmarks, publisher imprints, captions in the negative, with a small group of later San Francisco civic views showing reconstruction and the city after recovery.
The 1906 disaster reshaped California building practice, emergency response, insurance debate, and public memory of western urban growth. Insurance losses from the earthquake and subsequent fires exceeded $400 million, making the catastrophe one of the most expensive urban disasters in American history at the time. The destruction also accelerated new seismic building standards and fireproofing practices across California, while reconstruction transformed San Francisco into a major modern commercial city during the early twentieth century. San Jose photos expands the record beyond the familiar San Francisco ruins, showing damage across the Bay Area rather than only the burned financial district. Some corner wear, toning, creasing, and handling marks; overall in very good condition.
