[WWII] Duke University women’s student life photo album depicting Woman’s College dormitory life, sorority culture, Southern travel, wartime campus changes, and nursing training from freshman arrival through graduation, 1938-1944. Duke established the Woman’s College in 1930, with East Campus serving women students while West Campus served men, creating a coordinate college structure that shaped campus life through dormitories, women’s organizations, athletics, and formal social events. World War II changed Duke after 1941, when NROTC, Army Finance School, and Navy V-12 programs brought military training onto campus and accelerated graduation schedules. The album moves from sorority portraits, university events, and the Washington Duke Hotel to Southern travel through Linville, Mount Mitchell, Charleston, Columbia, and Magnolia Gardens, with captions identifying the “Baptist church where we bought bait from old Joe,” and encounters with Black workers during white student travel in the Jim Crow South. Later pages add wartime and professional scenes, including men in uniform on campus steps, posed views at the James B. Duke memorial, and Florence Meiser in nursing uniform at Henry Ford Hospital in 1944.

Photo album of 395 silver gelatin photographs, various sizes ranging from 2.5" x 3.5" to 6" x 4.5", Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, with travel in North Carolina, South Carolina, and beyond, 1938-1944. Handwritten captions identify nearly every subject and place, including “Ginny Hendrie was my roommate,” “Jarvis girls,” “Arriving at Duke,” “Jarvis House in winter,” “321 Jarvis House,” “The Library,” “The Union,” “The Women’s Gym,” “Duke Gardens in the spring, 1940,” and “Zeta Tau Alpha 1943.” Women appear in dormitory rooms, on campus steps, at football games, at Zeta Tau Alpha events, at the “Zeta Tau Alpha initiation banquet at the Washington Duke Hotel,” on mountain trips to Linville and Mount Mitchell, during spring vacation at Southern Theological Seminary and Magnolia Gardens in Charleston, and later in nursing uniform at “Henry Ford Hospital,” with Florence Meiser dated 1944.

The inscriptions preserve names across Duke social life, including Dottie Stivers, Betty Spangler, Ruth Fraser, Ginny Hayward, Kathleen Watkins, Mary Alice Sutton, Beth Shaw, and dozens more in the 1943 Zeta Tau Alpha group portrait. Black workers appear in captioned campus and travel scenes, including “Old Joe selling flowers” and a man beside a sign reading “Liver sold,” placing elite white women’s college life within the Jim Crow South. Album pages show edge chipping, unbound, and handling wear, while the photographs remain in tact and captions legible; overall in good condition. The unusually high count, dense naming, and full student chronology give Duke University, women’s education, sorority culture, Southern travel, and wartime campus collections a deeply indexed visual record of one woman’s college world.
