Two Works by Groundbreaking Gay Black Sci-Fi Author Samuel R. Delany
First Edition
[African American][LGBTQ][Sci-Fi Literature] Collection of two works by one of the first openly gay Black authors in science fiction, Samuel R. Delany, 1966 and 1975. Delany’s novels radically expanded the boundaries of genre fiction in the mid-20th century, incorporating themes of identity, and social structure, and challenging heteronormative and racial hierarchies within speculative literature. These works—Babel-17 (1966) and Dhalgren (1975)—reflect his stylistic range and intellectual ambition, and remain landmarks of experimental science fiction. Archive includes:[1] Delany, Samuel R. Babel-17. New York: Ace Books, 1966. First edition. An Ace paperback original with cover art by Jack Gaughan. This is the true first printing of Delany’s fourth novel, published when he was just 24 years old. The novel follows Rydra Wong, a polyglot poet and spaceship captain, as she is enlisted to decode a mysterious alien language that functions as a weapon—“Babel-17.” Winner of the Nebula Award for Best Novel, the book exemplifies Delany’s interest in structuralist linguistics and the politics of language, as well as his early creation of female and queer-coded protagonists.
[2] Delany, Samuel R. Dhalgren. New York: Bantam Books, January 1975. First mass-market paperback edition. A cult classic and Delany’s best-known work, Dhalgren is an elliptical, metafictional novel that follows a nameless, bisexual, possibly schizophrenic Black protagonist in a surreal, post-apocalyptic city called Bellona. With dense prose and fragmented narrative structure, Dhalgren is often cited as one of the most challenging and ambitious novels in 20th-century science fiction. It became a bestseller despite its avant-garde form, and cemented Delany’s reputation as a literary and countercultural figure.
Both copies structurally sound and internally clean, with light wear and toning consistent with age. Overall very good condition. Together, these books represent a critical moment in the diversification and intellectual maturation of the science fiction genre, marking Delany as a boundary-breaking figure who brought race, sexuality, and post-structuralist theory into space-age fiction.
