Periodical

[LGBTQ Newspaper] Gay. Vol. 3 Issue 67. January 10, 1972. New York: Four Swords Inc. 20 pages. Measures 11" x 16". Early LGBTQ centered newspaper from New York discussing local events, conflicts, policy decisions and more affecting the LGBTQ community. This issues lead story discusses "Suburban Stonewall Shakes Long Island," an event from Nov. 19, 1972 when Suffolk County Police raided a gay and lesbian bar called Corral bar in Long Island. The raid resulted in several customers being assaulted by police and several arrests, all detailed int he article. Also included in this issue are feminist Kate Millett discussing violence in the women's revolution, and a centerfold spread on Oscar Wilde. Clarke and Nichols, the founders and publishers of the paper, were lovers who worked together on this long-running tabloid and several books. Clarke was murdered in Mexico in 1975. The newspaper, with stringers across the country and national distribution, lasted until executive editors Lige Clarke and Jack Nichols resigned after issue 105. While the publishers planned to continue, 105 appears to have been the final issue. Minor wear around edges and newspaper is starting to split at fold. Otherwise, in very good condition, offering a unique look at the LGBTQ community in New York in the 1970s and the issues they faced.
