Measures 5.25" x 7.75". Book includes a selection of 52 different Black poets and 40 illustrations. Black poets become more prominent in the early 1900s in a post-slavery America as Black Americans used their words to challenge systems of oppression and demand justice. Their voices inspired and informed new generations, serving as a guiding light in the ongoing fight for equality. This early book collects some of the most noteworthy poets and poems, addresses the history of black poetry in America, and includes illustrations of some of the most famous poets including: Phillis Wheatley, Joseph S. Cotter, James Weldon Johnson, Langston Hughes, W. E. B. Du Bois, and Mae Smith Johnson. Green cloth boards with gilt title and authors name. Slight wear on edges and in center of cover from use. Pastedown and front board are separating from spine, but are still loosely attached at the top. Images are clear and pages are clean. Overall, in very good condition.
