Lesbian Voices was published quarterly beginning in 1974, with the purpose of amplifying lesbian voices in a "dignified format" with a "constructive sense of life, in keeping with [their] belief that lesbianism can be and should be good, wholesome, fulfilling, and joyful". Within each magazine are various poems, prose, stories, and book reviews of lesbian authors. In a metaphorical poem entitled "Sappho Was Not Closet", author Julie Simmons asserts that "Amazons cannot hide in closets/because/because/because it is unnatural".
