This collection of plays were created to reconstruct the prejudiced narratives about African-Americans, thus presenting them as "a maker of civilization in Africa, a contributor to progress in Europe, and a factor in the development of Greater America". Carter G. Woodson, the author of the book's introduction, asserts that "The publication of this book, however, must be considered another step of the Negro toward the emancipation of his mind from the slavery of the inferiority complex".
