Written in African American Vernacular English (AAVE). 132 pages. Quarter bound in brown and tan cloth hardcovers with dark brown lettering on front board and gilt spine. Subtle floral pattern on left margin of front cover. As issued, no dust jacket. Octavo. A.C. Gordon was a profound lawyer, writer, and author, who received an honorary of Doctor of Laws degree from the College of William & Mary in 1906 and an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Washington and Lee University in 1923. He was a president of The Virginia Bar Association from 1920-21. In this collection of poems, he surfaces the various horrors experienced by enslaved African-Americans through Black dialects. He relays themes of Black oral history, tradition, culture, and life before the abolition of slavery. Ex-library copy with typical markings. Boards are minorly rubbed and show edge wear with slight fraying at head and tail of spine and along the lower edges. Text, printed on heavy stock, is clean and unmarked and binding is tight, overall in very good condition.
