Archive of five press photographs documenting Audrey Hepburn between 1959 and 1992, from an on-set injury during production of The Unforgiven through her later humanitarian work with UNICEF. The group records several distinct stages of Hepburn’s public life: her film career and marriage to actor Mel Ferrer, her intention to marry Italian psychiatrist Andrea Dotti, her work as a Special Ambassador for UNICEF, and her participation in a 1992 event involving the Peace Child/Greater Chicago chorus. The later photographs document the increasing prominence of humanitarian work during the final years of her life.

Five silver gelatin press photographs, four black and white and one in full color, dating between 1959 and 1992 and ranging in size from 9 x 5 inches to 8 x 10 inches. The earliest shows Hepburn on a stretcher following an injury on the set of The Unforgiven, with her then husband Mel Ferrer beside her. Another shows the 39-year-old Hepburn smiling after filing an intention to wed Italian psychiatrist Andrea Dotti. A 1989 photograph shows Hepburn posing with Barbara Walters after an interview concerning her new role as a Special Ambassador for UNICEF. In the 1992 image, Hepburn holds an eight-year-old performer from the Peace Child/Greater Chicago chorus in her lap.

Hepburn’s humanitarian work had personal roots in her childhood in the German-occupied Netherlands, where she experienced hunger, illness, and wartime deprivation. Her later involvement with UNICEF drew public attention to childhood hunger and food scarcity, extending her public career well beyond the films that had established her international reputation. The photographs are in very good condition. Spanning more than three decades, the group records the progression of Hepburn’s public life from Hollywood production and celebrity coverage to the humanitarian work that occupied her later years.
