African-American Baptism on a Charlotte, NC Farm, 1921
Photograph
[African-American Photography] A silver gelatin photograph of an African-American baptism held on Charlotte, North Carolina farmland. Dated July 3, 1921. Measuring at 3" x 4.5". A multitude of African-American families congregate beside a lake on a lush farm, witnessing a baptism. African-American baptisms in the South were typically held in summer months, often in rivers, lakes, and bayous. In the photo, both men and women wear large hats to obstruct the Southern summer heat. In the foreground alongside the lake, a woman holds her child in arms, whilst others stand to bear a clearer view. In the lake, church officials dressed in all white garments baptize an African-American baby. Families alongside the outer parts of the lake attempt to catch a better glimpse by hovering closer to the area in which the baptism is being held. Lush trees appear in the background, revealing the vast nature of the farmland. Penciled writing on the verso reads "Negro Baptism on Daddy's Farm, Charlotte, NC, July 3rd, 1921", suggesting that it was written by the child of the farm owner. In very good condition.Item #18965
