Photo Album

95 black and white silver gelatin photos of US Navy sailors stationed in New York City. Many photos of men in naval uniform or hospital gowns posed individually or together. Others show the shipyards and captures the city streets and buildings of New York City. Most measure about 2" x 2.75" to 2.75" x 4.25" and one large image measures 5" x 7." In original thick paper olive green album held by cloth cord and measures 7" x 9.5". Inscribed on the front "US Navy '17-19." The American navy focused on countering enemy U-boats in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea while convoying men and supplies to France and Italy. Each photo has a handwritten inscription below describing the content. The original owner inscribes the names or nicknames of members of his unit below their portrait. An endearing photo of a sailor relaxing on a set of stairs reading a paper and captioned "A letter from home." A more dynamic photo shows a lineup of men in uniform with their boots and equipment meticulously placed before them with the caption " Sat A.M. Inspection." Juxtaposed are three images of hundreds of sailors in drill position. Some particularly interesting photos show a happy group of four men posing with a newspaper titled "Germany Surrenders." The largest photo is a striking sepia toned photo of the medical unit working with cadavers, many masked and giving a haunting glance into the camera. These images give us a glimpse into the lives of what thousands of men experienced before, during, and after the formal declaration of war on the German Empire in the early 20th century. Overall in very good condition.
